Travelling: part 2

Today I'll tell how to get to Kirovskaya province by train.

This means of transportation may be the most interesting for those who want to "experience" Russia. Trains are very popular in Russia for long distance journeys because of several reasons, the main of which, in my opinion, is price - it's cheaper than an airplane.
Russian long distance train usually has several types of cars (or "compartments"). The cheapest is "плацкартный" (platskartny). This type of car looks like this from the inside:
[picture taken from: http://www.traveler-mir.com/tourist/raspolozhenie-mest-v-platskartnom-vagone]

This is entirely open concept car :) But it's the cheapest and it has all conveniences like 2 toilets, hot water, smoking "department", air conditioning (not everywhere, but in new trains it is) and conductor's services.

The next type (more expensive) is "купейный" (kupeiny).

In a car of this type space is divided  as you can see. Each "room" has a door and four beds. Conveniences are the same as in the previous type.

And the last type is "СВ" (SV), it's the most expensive.

Each room has two beds.

All the trains in Russia are operated by Russian Railways (Российские железные дороги), so you can buy train tickets on their website rzd.ru. On the top of the page you'll find a link to the web-site in English. Then you'll need to find a link which says "Passengers" and then you're ready to check trains.
Oh, I forgot one thing to buy ticket online you'll need at first to register on their page.
On the next page find "Buy tickets online", and then you will know what to do.
One important thing is that, fortunately or unfortunately" in Russia you can buy train tickets only 45 days before departure, so you cannot plan your trip, for example, three months ahead.

A lot of trains from St.Petersburg and Moscow go through Kotelnich and Kirov. If you wanna go to Kotelnich, choose "Kotelnich 1" in the search engine on rzd.ru.

After you chose the place of departure and arrival you'll see a list of available trains and seats.
Before departure remember to check what is the railway station of departure (as in Moscow and St.Petersburg there are much more of them then just one). It's quite easy to find out: when you look at the place of departure you'll find a lot of hyphens, for example "S-Peter-Gl" it means that train leaves from Saint Petersburg from Moskovsky railway station. Or "S-Pet-Lad" means that the train leaves from St. Petersburg from Ladozhsky railway station.

After you've chosen the places of departure and arrival, you choose the date and then you'll have to type in your personal information and choose a seat. After that is done you'll have to check if the information is correct and then you proceed to payment.

After payment you can print out the receipt and the ticket. You are ready to travel!
You, of course, can print out your ticket later from your account on rzd.ru.

The only thing i'd like to point out: it's very likely that the conductor will have no equipment to check your printed ticket and you'll have to wait until the conductor gets the list of passengers who bought their tickets on internet.

Travelling: part 1

Well, I've thought that it may be useful for somebody who hasn't traveled between Russian towns and cities before or who wants to travel alone. Well, fortunately nowadays it's as easy as to travel around Europe, you can buy\book tickets on internet. With hotels it's a little bit more difficult, but I think not a problem either.
So, let's start with airplanes.
There is one airport in Kirov's province and it's not far from Kirov. It even has its own web-site: http://www.pobedilovo.com/ but only in Russian, however Google Translate is always at your service. If we can trust the information given on the web-site, you can come to Kirov from the following cities: Moscow (Vnukovo airport), Naryan-Mar, Perm, Izhevsk, Ufa, Kazan, Samara. There are also transfer flights: Orenburg <-> Kazan, Kazan <-> Penza, Saransk <-> Kazan, Saratov <-> Kazan.
I suppose flights from Moscow are the most interesting for foreign travelers. Frankly speaking I found ticket purchase system and a good working timetables only on UTair web-site (http://www.utair.ru/en/index.html). But it's also possible to buy ticket with the help of "intermediary companies", for example http://www.davs.com/services/airtickets/ .
For those who speaks and understands Russian the site http://avia.tutu.ru maybe useful.
From the airport to Kirov you can get by bus #116. The trip takes approximately 45 minutes.

Hot "prehistoric" news

It's prehistoric because it's devoted to palaeontology. As we remember there is a very special place nearby Kotelnich known as Kotelnich pareiasaur fossil location. So, scientists of Vyatka palaeontological museum (Вятский палеонтологический музей) started an expedition to this place couple days ago. During this short time they have already managed to find a lot of bones of vertebrates. Because of the amount of the bones found scientists will at first locate the boundaries of this bones accumulation and then try to find joint skeletal material.
At a distance from the bones accumulation scientists have also found chaps which used to belong to a theromorph.
Unfortunately the river had destroyed a part of the fossil location before it was found by the scientists, however they hope for the better.
So let's wish a good luck to them! And we wait for more news and maybe some pictures :)

Forgot to note last time that the pictures were taken from kotelnich.info.

Today I post my own photos.

This is a monument, which is placed at Kotelnich's railway station so that it's seen to all the passing-by trains. This monument is devoted to the people who died during their emergency evacuation in the period of 1941-1944. These people were rescued from different cities and towns to Urals, but many of them died on the way. About 3,000 of those people are buried in Kotelnich. The lines in bold (on the right side of the monument) say: "They were not soldiers but their lives were taken by the war".
*(For those who maybe still don't know, the period of the World War II from 1941 to 1945 in Russia and other states, which used to be parts of the Soviet Union, is known as Great Patriotic War. So I hope now everybody understands what the Victory means to all the Russian people, especially those who faught, stayed alive and still live.)
Lines on the left side is a long list of 2,768 names of those who were buried in Kotelnich and places of their origin.

That was a short history. But there's a couple curious things about the monument. At first, this is the first monument in Russia devoted to the evacuated people. Secondly, it's a new monument, opened on July 17, 2010. The date wasn't chosen occasionally: on July 17, 1941, the bodies of the dead were taken from the first train with evacuated citizents and buried in Kotelnich. And thirdly, the monument was built with people's donations.

Alekseyevskaya fair

Kotelnich's authorities has decided when the ennual Alekseyevskaya fair will take place, it'll happen on March 16-17, 2013.
Alekseyevskaya fair is a very old tradition, it started 366 years ago. The fair used to be a big event not only for the town and it's surroundings but for the whole Vyatka province. During the times of Russian Empire the Alekseyevskaya fair was somewhat a "schtick" of Kotelnich.
The name of the fair comes from the name of Alexius of Rome, a Man of God, who was said to be the patron/angel of the town. As the fair took place during Lent it wasn't distinguished by colourfulness nor joy. But the time had passed and the situation changed, people could hear music and find some other entertainments. The turnover was quite big. But in the beginnig of 20th century the fair ceased to be and was restarted only recently.
At the fair one can find different types of goods.

Here are couple photos from Alekseyevskaya fair 2007.

Dino-park in Kotelnich

I'm quite late with posting news, but better late than never :)

So, on November 17, 2012 the Dino-park was opened in Kotelnich - a great event for the town.
A "gala" opening did not take place due to the fire in the neighboring house, which took place on the eve.

Among the invited guests one could see N. Belykh, the governor of Kirovskaya province, and L. Danilovich, the governor of the town.

For more information, please, follow the links (all in Russian):
